The body of C Vijayakumar, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Coimbatore, was found this morning at his home.

Vijayakumar died after being shot at his home in Coimbatore’s Red Fields area. Suicide is suspected in this case.

Using the gunman’s service revolver, Mr Vijayakumar shot himself, officials said.

For the past few months, the 2009 batch IPS officer has been suffering from depression. Moreover, he has been complaining of sleeplessness lately. Family members from Chennai had recently moved to Coimbatore to help him feel better.

M K Stalin condoled the death of the senior officer. According to him, “I am deeply saddened by the death of DIG Vijayakumar. He has been an SP and held other responsibilities. He brought honor to Tamil Nadu.”.

I am deeply saddened by this loss because he was such a hard-working officer,” said Tamil Nadu DGP Shankar Jiwal.

As a 2009-batch IPS officer, Vijayakumar served as Superintendent of Police in Kanchipuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvarur. Previously, he served as deputy commissioner of police in Anna Nagar, Chennai.

Online and offline counselling, along with a variety of activities, are already available to police across the state as part of a wellness program aimed at their mental health.
