According to Nirmala Sitharaman, the Union Finance Minister has asked enforcement agencies to increase their vigil and target big smugglers involved in drug trafficking specially Cocaine.
The agencies need to determine if India is becoming a country that consumes cocaine and other psychotropic drugs, Ms Sitharaman said.
On Monday, she addressed the 65th founding day of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence in the national capital.
“The DRI must ensure that smugglers are not smarter than you. Every smuggling case must come to a conclusion as soon as possible,” said Ms Sitharaman.
Smugglers of Cocaine must be arrested and prosecuted, and the DRI must ensure that big handlers of such smuggling activities face the law.
It is important to work hard and catch those who are sending mountains of drugs. There is a need for bilateral agreements with foreign countries because technology has enabled us to do things we were not able to do before.
A suggestion was also made to the DRI by the finance minister. To see global cooperation, the DRI, CBIC, and Revenue department may begin a two-day meeting.
In order to crack the smugglers, she suggested holding a workshop with the cooperation of intelligence agencies.
As a result of India’s G-20 presidency, the finance minister said, the country should take advantage of the opportunity to arrange a global meeting where organizations like the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) should be invited to show us what they do and how that helps us to stop smuggling.
The number of seizures of NDPS items in India has increased sharply year-over-year, according to a comparative trend of NDPS seizures.
