In Chhattisgarh’s Sukma area, the Maoists triggered a blast this morning that injured a CRPF CoBRA Battalion personnel.

Today, 20 of the 90 seats in Chhattisgarh go to the polls. A tight security arrangement has been made for the twelve seats in the Maoist-hit region of Bastar. In this zone, there are around 60,000 security personnel. Two seats were won by the BJP in 2018 while 17 were won by the Congress.

As part of the first phase of the election, Raman Singh, Bhawna Bohra, Lata Usendi, and Gautam Uike will face off against each other. Other candidates include Mohammad Akbar of the Congress Party, Savitri Manoj Mandavi, Mohan Markam, Vikram Mandavi and Kawasi Lakhma.

In 2013, a Maoist attack wiped out the entire leadership of the ruling Congress party, so the party has pinned its hopes on Bhupesh Baghel, who revived its state unit after losing its entire leadership. Its campaign is powered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s image – staying true to its traditional formula.

Among the two heartland states it governs, Congress believes it has a better chance of winning Chhattisgarh, where the government claims to have done well on multiple measures, including agriculture, education, and controlling Maoism.

In the middle of the campaign, however, corruption allegations were leveled at the Chief Minister, hampering the party’s campaign. Sources said during investigation of a now illegal Mahadev online betting app, it was found that around ₹ 508 crore has been paid by its promoters to Bhupesh Baghel and regular payments have been made in the past. The Enforcement Directorate, which Baghel has called the ruling party’s electoral ally, has been weaponized by the BJP, he claims. His party’s chances will not be affected by the allegations, he said.

Taking over from Congress’ legendary chief minister Lal Thanhawla after 10 years, the Mizo National Front hope to continue to govern in Mizoram. Traditionally, the ruling party in the state receives two terms before becoming irrelevant.

Aam Aadmi Party from Arvind Kejriwal and a new, rising regional party, Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), are expected to enter the race for the state’s top job.

A voter share of 37.8 percent helped the Mizo National Front to win 26 out of 40 assembly seats in 2018. Five seats were won by the Congress, and one by the BJP.

Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana will also be counted on December 3.
