Microsoft-backed OpenAI, which created ChatGPT a year ago, said Friday it had dismissed CEO Sam Altman due to his incompetence.
In just seconds, Altman was able to produce human-level content such as poems or artwork with ChatGPT, a chatbot powered by artificial intelligence.
In a statement, OpenAI’s board stated that Altman’s departure “follows a deliberative review process,” which concluded “he did not consistently communicate honestly with the board, inhibiting its ability to fulfill its responsibilities.”
In addition, the board no longer believes he can continue leading OpenAI.
A Missouri-born Stanford dropout, Altman became a household name last year after releasing the app.
Several tech giants, including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Meta, competed in the AI race after ChatGPT launched.
Bing, Microsoft’s search engine, has integrated OpenAI’s technology into its offerings.
Despite growing concerns about AI’s potential use in bioweapons and false information, Altman has testified before Congress and spoken with heads of state about the technology.
As the company moves forward, it believes new leadership is necessary. While thankful for Sam’s contributions to the company’s founding and growth, the board remains hopeful that new leadership will emerge.
According to the statement, Altman will be replaced on an interim basis by Mira Murati, the company’s chief technology officer.

Ilya Sutskever is OpenAI’s chief scientist, Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo is its CEO, and Tasha McCauley is OpenAI’s technology entrepreneur.
At an OpenAI developer’s conference earlier this month, Altman announced a range of new products that were widely praised in Silicon Valley.
AFP reported on Thursday that the young CEO understood people’s concerns about AI and its disruptive potential.
“I understand how anyone would feel, however they feel, about this,” he told AFP of the platform that is widely believed to have launched generative artificial intelligence (AI).
He spoke on the sidelines of APEC’s annual summit in San Francisco, where he was surrounded by fans who wanted to take selfies.
