In a move that will likely raise a political storm, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has reopened a corruption case against former chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, months after the Bihar reversal in which his party allied with Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United (JDU) and formed the government.

In 2018, the CBI started investigating allegations of corruption in the allotment of railway projects when Mr Yadav was minister.

According to CBI sources, “no case has been made out of the allegations”. As well as Mr Yadav, his son and Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, and daughters Chanda Yadav and Ragini Yadav are named in the case.

CBI reopens case months after Nitish Kumar broke with BJP in Bihar and joined Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) to form government. Earlier, Kumar alleged a BJP plot to split his party.

As Opposition parties double down on their accusations of misuse of probe agencies by the BJP-led government, the CBI’s move is sure to spark a massive political row.

Mr Yadav is accused of receiving a south Delhi property as a bribe from DLF Group, which was interested in rail land lease projects in Mumbai’s Bandra.

There’s a claim that the property was bought for $5 crore by a DLF-funded shell company — much lower than the market price of $30 crore. Tejashwi Yadav and other relatives of Mr Yadav bought the shell company by transferring shares, giving them ownership of the south Delhi bungalow.

73-year-old Mr Yadav is also recovering from kidney transplant surgery earlier this month.
