In connection with an alleged land-for-jobs scam, CBI officials are questioning former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi in Patna.
They’re just recording her statement, not raiding or searching. They took Ms Devi’s appointment beforehand, the sources said.
A day earlier, eight Opposition parties wrote to Narendra Modi alleging misuse of central agencies by the BJP. Tejashwi Yadav, Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister, was one of the signatories. Former Bihar Chief Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) patriarch Lalu Prasad Yadav was one of the opposition leaders targeted. The moves of central agencies “had often raised suspicions that they were working as extensions of the ruling party”.
In the CBI’s land-for-jobs case, Mr Yadav, Rabri Devi, and their daughters Misa and Hema are named. In the May 2022 FIR, Mr Yadav and his family members are accused of buying land at throwaway rates in exchange for giving out jobs during his tenure as Union Railway Minister.
Aside from the veteran politician, his wife and daughters, the FIR names 12 people who got jobs in exchange for land. The CBI arrested Mr Yadav’s aide and former Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Bhola Yadav in July last year.
Rabri Devi’s questioning comes a week before the Yadavs and other accused appear in court.
CBI filed a chargesheet last year for conspiracy and corruption. A FIR alleges that some Patna residents were appointed as substitutes in Group-D posts in Mumbai, Jabalpur, Kolkata, Jaipur, and Hajipur. These people allegedly transferred ownership of their land to Mr Yadav’s family and a company later taken over by him.
Land was allegedly transferred to the Yadavs at throwaway prices in some cases. According to the CBI case, the appointments were against Railways guidelines. Leaders of the RJD trashed the allegations, saying they were politically motivated. Devi said last week the BJP is scared of Yadav. We won’t run away. We’ve been facing these allegations for 30 years. BJP is scared of Lalu Yadav.”
