Meitei Pangals, or Muslims, who live on the strip of land between these two districts are caught between the Kuki tribe and the Meiteis in the deadly crossfire.
Manipur has been experiencing ethnic violence for over 100 days now. There haven’t been any major incidents reported for the past few days as the state slowly returns to normal.
However, constant gunfire and bomb attacks have become the norm in the district between Kuki-majority Churachandpur and Meitei-majority Bishnupur.
Meitei Pangals, or Muslims, who live on the strip of land between these two districts are caught between the Kuki tribe and the Meiteis in the deadly crossfire.
Manipur has a population of 32 lakh, of which 9 percent are Muslims. In the midst of the fighting between the Kukis and Meiteis, people from the Muslim community are desperately calling for peace.
INDINEWS found police barricading the roads in Kwakta in Bishnupur district, effectively marking the frontline as Churachandpur, the Kuki-dominated region, lies beyond.
While sleeping at their village home in Bishnupur district on August 6, three people, including a father and son, were shot and butchered. It is alleged that miscreants from Churachandpur infiltrated the village at night and attacked the Meiteis.
According to Salauddin Qasimi of the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind in Bishnupur district, two masjids in Kwakta were used by the security forces for a few hours, and firing occurred. However, they left after we explained our situation.
Historically, Meiteis and Kukis lived as neighbours in Kwakta. Muslims, however, make up 90 percent of the town’s population. In spite of not being involved in the conflict, the Muslims of Manipur are helplessly caught in the crossfire between the Meiteis and Kukis. Kwakta’s livelihoods have been destroyed.
Throughout Kwakta, people have been in a state of panic. Food prices have skyrocketed, livelihoods are lacking, and life has become a nightmare. As a result of bombings in Kwakta, there are no schools left, according to Muslim scholar Nasir Khan.
Kuki and Meitei neighbours have been urged to stop fighting by the Muslims. “We Meitei Pangals are a minority community that has been badly affected, just like Nepalis and others. We appeal to our Meitei and Kuki brothers and sisters to bring back peace,” local Muslim leader Hazi Rafat Ali told INDINEWS.
In Delhi, Muslim leaders from Manipur requested more security in their areas. Located along the border between Kuki-majority Churachandpur and Meitei-dominated Bishnupur districts, Kwakta has been at the center of the conflict for the past three months, with at least 12 people injured.
