Goa’s Zuari Bridge: A car carrying four passengers fell into a river after hitting the railing of Zuari Bridge in Goa’s Cortalim village in the early hours of Thursday, prompting a rescue operation to locate the car.

Fire and emergency services along with local people, Indian Coast Guard and Coastal Police are engaged in an operation to locate the car.

A senior fire and emergency service personnel said they received a call from a civilian about the incident at 1.10 am.

Witnesses revealed that before hitting the railing, a speeding SUV overtook another vehicle on the bridge and went into the water.

A senior police officer said at least four people were in the vehicle.

An SUV carrying about four people fell into the Zuari river from a bridge in South Goa district early today.

He said the Indian Coast Guard, Navy, fire and emergency services and Goa Police personnel have launched an operation to trace the vehicle and its occupants after the accident that took place at around 1:10 am.

He said the SUV tried to overtake a car on the Zuari river bridge on the national highway at Courtalim village, about 15 km from state capital Panaji.

It collided with the railing of the bridge and fell into the river, a senior police officer said.

The officer further said that according to eyewitnesses, there were at least four people in the vehicle and it was being driven by a woman.

He said the Goa Police, along with a Coast Guard ship, barge and fire brigade and emergency services personnel launched a massive operation to locate the vehicle, but it could not be traced due to darkness in the night.

“Indian Navy divers also joined the search and rescue operation this morning,” the official said.

The bridge is located on a national highway between Madgaon (South Goa) and Panaji.
