Prior to the 2024 elections, Tariq Mansoor, a former vice chancellor of AMU, was chosen to serve as the BJP’s vice president. By bridging the gap between different Muslim groups, especially those from Dalit and other lower-class origins, this strategic action hopes to foster peaceful coexistence.
In one of the most recent central office-bearers shuffles ahead of the 2024, Lok Sabha election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has chosen MLC, former vice chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, and Pasmanda Muslim Tariq Mansoor as the party vice-president. The appointment emphasises the party’s efforts to forge closer ties with Muslim populations coming from Dalit and other lower-class backgrounds and to promote inclusivity.
As the saffron party seeks re-election in the upcoming elections, Tariq Mansoor’s appointment is being considered as a part of the party’s overtures to Pasmanda (backward) Muslims.
On May 17, 2017, Tariq Mansoor began serving as the vice chancellor of AMU for a five-year term. His term was meant to last through 2022, but due to the coronavirus epidemic, it was extended under special circumstances for an additional year.
When he was chosen as one of six candidates for the UP legislative council, Tariq Mansoor resigned from his position as vice chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. He is the first vice chancellor of AMU to be named as a nominee for the legislative council while still serving in that position. Tariq Mansoor previously held the position of Principal of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College & Hospital, the largest teaching and tertiary medical care facility in western India.
Tariq Mansoor has been given a crucial role in the party’s Pasmanda outreach. He is renowned for leading the AMU on a “middle path” during the anti-NRC and CAA protests and collaborating closely with the RSS to promote the teachings of Mughal prince Dara Shikoh on peaceful Hindu-Muslim coexistence.
In 2023, Tariq Mansoor was nominated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India as a Member of Padma Awards Committee. The AMU profile describes Tariq Mansoor as a keen tennis player who has reading interests in education, history, international affairs and politics. “His opinion pieces on a wide range of issues have been carried by leading dailies and news portals,” it read.
A number of new programmes have been launched during his time as vice chancellor, including D.M. (Cardiology), MCH (Neurosurgery), M.B.A. (Hospital Administration and Islamic Finance), Masters in Architecture, M.Tech. in Solar Energy, Biomedical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Material Sciences, Green Energy and Sustainable Development, Earthquake Engineering and Disaster Management, M.Voc (Hons), B.Tech. in Food Technology, Artificial Intelligence
The RSS has been reaching out to Muslim academics and professionals, especially those in the professions of health, law, and bureaucracy, in an effort to have a positive influence on the discourse around minorities, while the BJP is working to develop its relations with the Pasmanda Muslim community.
Jamal Siddiqui, the leader of the BJP’s Minority Morcha, praised Mansoor as a “nationalist Muslim” who has consistently supported the philosophy of “nation first.” Siddiqui complimented Mansoor for prioritising welfare and socio-economic justice over identity problems and acknowledged his in-depth awareness of the divisions within the Muslim community.
