Saturday evening, DUSU’s central panel posts of president, vice-president, secretary, and joint secretary were counted. Friday was the day of the election.

According to officials, the RSS-affiliated ABVP won three out of the four central panel posts of the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU), while the Congress’ student wing NSUI won one.

ABVP’s Tushar Dedha defeated NSUI’s Hitesh Gulia to become DUSU president.

Congress student wing vice-president Abhi Dahiya won the election.

As secretary and joint secretary, respectively, Aparajita and Sachin Baisla won for the ABVP.

As always, the ABVP and NSUI have fought directly in the DUSU elections. In the 2019 elections, the ABVP won three of the four seats.

Elections for the DUSU were held last year. Due to COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021, polls could not be conducted, while the academic calendar could have disrupted polls in 2022.

For this year’s four positions, 24 candidates applied.

According to Chander Shekhar, the chief election officer, 42 percent of voters participated in the elections. The election was open to around one lakh students.

The turnout was higher than in 2019, when 39.90 percent participated, but it didn’t surpass 2018’s nearly 11-year high.

In 2018, 44.46 percent of voters turned out, and in 2017, 42.8 percent.

For the central panel elections, 52 colleges and departments used electronic voting machines (EVMs), while paper ballots were used for the college union elections.

Fee hikes, lack of affordable accommodations, enhanced security during college fests, and menstrual leave were among the most pressing issues students faced.

There were as many candidates for all four central posts as the ABVP, Congress-affiliated NSUI, SFI-backed CPI(M) and AISA-affiliated CPI(ML).

Most colleges and faculties are represented by the DUSU. Students’ unions are also elected each year at each college.
