Bilkis Bano has petitioned the Supreme Court challenging the release of 11 men who were convicted of gang-raping her during the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had ruled that the Gujarat government can release convicts under a 1991 remission policy on the petition of one of the convicts.

As a result of that ruling, all 11 men were released by the Gujarat government.

As a 21-year-old, Bilkis Bano was gang-raped by the men who killed nine members of her family, including her three-year-old daughter, during the 2002 Gujarat riots following the Godhra train burning.
