Bharat Jodo Or Gathbandhan Todo: In a disagreement over their views on right-wing ideologue VD Savarkar, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction warned that its partnership with Congress could be at risk.

Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant told NDTV, “Uddhav Thackeray ji may make a statement. In the morning, Sanjay Raut said we may not continue in the MVA (Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition). That’s a serious statement from the party. What more do you need?”

In response to a question about the alliance, he reiterated the group’s criticism of the BJP for allying with Jammu and Kashmir’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut, “Savarkar’s issue is important to us and we support his ideology.” Uddhav Thackeray’s son and Shiv Sena MLA Aaditya Thackeray said, “We made our point clear yesterday itself.” For now, whatever Uddhav Thackeray and Sanjay Raut said, we stand by that.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi did not target Savarkar, but was stating a historical fact. We agree to disagree. He refuted the impression that it will weaken Maha Vikas Aghadi.

Following the Maharashtra elections in 2019, the Shiv Sena formed the MVA alliance with the Congress and Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

The party has since been accused of forming an unusual coalition in order to grab top billing in India’s richest state – home to Mumbai, the country’s financial and entertainment capital.

Eknath Shinde walked over with the majority of Shiv Sena MLAs earlier this year to join the BJP and become Chief Minister in the process as a result of the deal.

Last week, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized Vinayak Damodar Savarkar for seeking mercy from the British while in prison, highlighting the differences between the right-wing Shiv Sena and its centre-left ally.

In contrast to Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Vallabhbhai Patel, Mr Gandhi said Savarkar was a coward.

His Shiv Sena faction has “immense respect” for Savarkar, Uddhav Thackeray countered allegations he is ditching his father’s Hindutva legacy.
