Bengaluru Couple Rescued: During the removal of structures that illegally blocked the city’s drainage system, a couple in Bengaluru threatened to set themselves on fire if their house was demolished.
A couple refused to budge as the BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) continued demolitions in the northeastern part of the city.
Sunil Singh and Sona Sen screamed that they would set themselves on fire when the bulldozer approached.
A bottle of petrol was held by one of them as they clung to the wall outside their home.
They were seen splashing themselves with petrol and being pulled up by policemen and neighbours in dramatic videos.
A couple appeared ready to light a match when water was sprayed on them.
Several neighbors pleaded with the couple not to do anything rash and urged the civic officials to stop the demolition.
In an attack on the administration, they claimed to have documents proving their house is legal.
Civic officials, however, demolished a part of their home. The couple was taken to the police station by police.
In the area, six houses are partially built on storm drains.
“We told them we would only demolish the storm drain. However, they refused to budge. We began demolition with the help of police and marshals. “We had given them notice,” said Pampathy, executive engineer of the civic body.
After heavy rain last month flooded offices, colonies, and crippled the city’s infrastructure, structures blocking storm drains are being removed.
Several areas of the IT city, including Mahadevapura, Sarjapur, and Bellandur, where the majority of tech giants have offices, were submerged.
According to IndiNews, builders, IT parks, and hospitals in Mahadevapura zone have allegedly encroached on storm water drains.
Mohammed Nalapad, Congress youth president, had the Nalapad International School’s compound wall built on a storm water drain, which was demolished.
