Balamani Amma Google Doodle: Google on Tuesday honored acclaimed Indian poet Balamani Amma with a special doodle on her 113th birth anniversary. The doodle has been designed by Kerala-based artist Devika Ramachandran.
Nalapat Balamani Amma was born on 19 July 1909 in the then Madras Presidency. She was the recipient of several awards and honors including Padma Bhushan, Sahitya Akademi Award and Saraswati Samman.
She is known as ‘Amma’ (Mother) and ‘Muthassi’ (Grandmother) of Malayalam poetry.
Balamani Amma’s first poem ‘ Koppukai’ was published in 1930, when she was just 21 years old. He published more than 20 anthologies of poems, as well as other works such as translations.
He inspired generations of Malayalam poets. His best-known works include Amma (1934), Muthassi (1962) and Majuvinte Katha (1966).
His daughter Kamala Das is a famous novelist. Das’s autobiography, “My Story” was released in 1976. Balamani Amma married VM Nair, managing editor of the widely circulated Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi, at the age of 19.
