The government has granted Geographical Indications (GI) tags to a variety of products, including Gamosa from Assam, Tandur Redgram from Telangana, and an apricot variety from Ladakh.

According to the ministry of commerce and industry, there are 432 GI in total.
Gamosa from Assam, Tandur Redgram from Telangana, RaktseyKarpo Apricot from Ladakh, and Alibag White Onion from Maharashtra have all been given GI tags.
According to the report, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala hold the most GIs.
The government recently approved an expenditure of 75 crores for three years for awareness programs promoting GIs.
It refers to a product originating from a definite geographical region, whether it is agricultural, natural or manufactured (handicrafts and industrial goods).
An origin-based name conveys a sense of quality and distinctiveness, which can be attributed to its location.
Registration of GI products involves filing an application, preliminary scrutiny and examination, notice of cause, publication in the geographical indications journal, opposition to registration, and registration.
The application can be made by any association of persons, producers, organizations or authorities established by or under law. Producers’ interests must be represented by the applicant.
Famous GI-tagged goods include Basmati rice, Darjeeling Tea, Chanderi Fabric, Mysore Silk, Kullu Shawl, Kangra Tea, Thanjavur Paintings, Allahabad Surkha, Farrukhabad Prints, Lucknow Zardozi and Kashmir Walnut Wood Carving.
