The Assam Police has arrested five people on charges of junior ragging at Dibrugarh University, after Anand Sarma, a junior year student in the Department of Commerce, allegedly jumped from the second floor of the hostel to save himself from the alleged brutal assault by university seniors.
He was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries and is under observation. The Dibrugarh police registered a case on the complaint of the student’s family and arrested one former and four current students.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has appealed to the students to ‘say no to ragging’.
Taking to Twitter, he tweeted, “It is learned that a student of Dibrugarh University has suffered injuries in an alleged case of ragging. According to reports, he was accompanied by two other juniors who were allegedly victims of ragging.
The university authorities, including the Anti-Ragging Task Force, have taken cognizance of the incident and have launched an inquiry into the incidents.
According to sources, the victim’s mother has made some very serious allegations in her complaint to the police. Sarita Sharma, who lodged a complaint with the Dibrugarh police station against the culprits, alleged that the incident was a result of ragging and torturing her son mentally and physically, tried to kill him, robbed him of his money and snatched his mobile phone. He also accused those responsible for the incident of forcibly taking liquor and ganja in his son’s hand and taking objectionable photographs in a conspiracy to lay the groundwork to protect his future.
The arrested accused include Rahul Chhetri, an alumnus, and four other students. The Dibrugarh police have registered a case under sections 120B/341/395/307/143 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Sources say that Anand Sarma had been complaining about ragging to the university and had given a written complaint to the warden of ‘C’ block of “Padma Nath Gohain Baruah Chatra Niwas” (PNGBCN Hostel) on November 17 this year, in which he The names of the people were mentioned. which was troubling him.
