A team from IIT Kanpur proposed artificial rain to Delhi Ministers Gopal Rai and Atishi during a meeting on the air emergency.
As a result of a sharp dip in air quality over the past week, the Arvind Kejriwal government plans to provide residents in Delhi with artificial rain on November 20-21. Due to a combination of crop residue burning in neighbouring states and local factors such as vehicular emissions, the air quality index in the national capital has remained in the ‘severe’ category for seven straight days.
During the air emergency in the capital, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai and Finance Minister Atishi met with a team from IIT Kanpur that proposed artificial rain.
All Delhi ministers will meet at 12.30 pm to discuss air pollution, according to the Environment Minister.
Delhi’s government has now requested a detailed plan from the IIT team. This plan will be submitted to the Supreme Court on Friday. Delhi’s toxic air days are the subject of a number of petitions before the court. As soon as the Supreme Court approves the plan, the Delhi government and the center will begin implementing it.
In order to create artificial rain, we need at least 40 percent cloud cover. It is possible that we will have cloud cover on November 20-21. If we get permission to implement this plan, we can conduct a pilot study,” he explained.
During the Supreme Court hearing on Friday, we will present this proposal to the court for consideration. If the court approves, we will work with the Centre to obtain the required permissions.
Earlier this year, the Supreme Court took strong note of Delhi’s pollution and said it would not allow a political battle to take place amid the “murder of people’s health”. It had been ordered by the court that stubble burning stop immediately in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
