Over 20 military installations around Joshimath in Uttarakhand have sustained “medium-to-minor damage,” Gen. Pande said.
Gen. Pande said in an annual address of the state of the army’s operations, “We are ready to relocate more units if necessary.” Our readiness hasn’t been affected.
Known as the gateway to mountain expeditions and pilgrimage sites like Badrinath, the town has seen rapid infrastructure growth. As a result, its ecosystem has been damaged and there have been a lot of landslides and flash floods.
This area is also a key garrison center for defending the 3,488-kilometer border with China, also known as the Line of Actual Control. There are over 20,000 Indian troops and military hardware there, including artillery and missile systems.
Cracks have appeared in over 600 buildings in the tiny town, and the Supreme Court will hear a plea from a religious leader on Jan 16. According to the petition, a hydroelectric project is sinking because of construction. In the region, the crisis has reignited a decades-old debate over development versus the environment.
The lawsuit has been filed in the top court seeking legal intervention to stop work on the tunnel being built by state-run NTPC Ltd while relief and rescue operations are going on. Until a panel of geologists, hydrologists, and engineers approves its nearby hydroelectric power project.
