During the reorganization of states on linguistic lines in 1957, the border issue arose. As part of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency, Maharashtra claimed Belagavi, which has a large Marathi-speaking population. A total of 814 Marathi-speaking villages in Karnataka are also claimed by the state.

According to the State Reorganisation Act and the 1967 Mahajan Commission Report, Karnataka maintains the demarcation done on linguistic lines.

As a symbol of the state’s commitment to Belagavi, Karnataka built the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, modeled after the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, which hosts a legislative session every year.
