According to the party’s rulebook, selecting a chief of the Nationalist Congress Party takes time. As a member of the working committee, the party president (Sharad Pawar) must also be thoroughly involved. According to the faction, the process for electing Ajit Pawar as the party chief should have started at least two weeks before the June 30 election.

The decision to switch camps was made last week, said Praful Patel, a former loyalist of Sharad Pawar and now a key leader in the rebel faction. Ajit Pawar’s faction has exactly five days to complete the whole process.

According to the NCP constitution, 10 members must propose a candidate for the party’s top job. A date must be set for the submission of names by the working committee. As a member of the working committee, the party president should receive the proposal by a fixed date.

After the names of candidates are made public, there should be at least seven days before the election.

After the state committees vote, the ballot boxes must be sent to the national committee, which is headed by the party president.

Moreover, there is an emergency provision requiring the seniormost general secretary to act in the absence of the party president.

However, none of these rules were followed.

According to Sharad Pawar, he was unaware of the rebels’ plans. Additionally, he has written to the Election Commission, asking why he was not informed that the Ajit Pawar faction has written to them claiming the party name and election symbol.

As per certain news reports, we would like to know whether Shri Ajit Pawar’s purported petition was actually filed on 30.06.2023 or on 05.07.2023 and backdated to 30.06.2023. In order for us to formulate an appropriate response, this information is extremely important,” Mr Pawar wrote to the Commission.

After a meeting of the party’s National Executive today, Mr Pawar spoke emphatically to the media. NCP’s president is me, so anyone who says he is the president is lying, there is no truth in what they are saying. In my opinion, it does not matter what someone (Ajit Pawar) says… I did not know about Praful’s plans to attack me… The ball is now at the EC’s disposal,” he said.

In response to his nephew’s jibe at his age, he added, “I am still effective at 82 or 92.”
