Airtel launch 5G service: Bharti Airtel has become the first company to launch 5G service in the country. The services will be available in eight cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi, Bangalore, and other telecom operator Bharti Airtel’s 5G services will be available in eight cities from Saturday, President Sunil Bharti Mittal announced at the India Mobile Congress.
Bharti Airtel has become the first company to launch 5G service in the country. The services will be available in eight cities, which include Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi, Bangalore and others.
Mittal said, “When you (Prime Minister) will launch 5G today. 5G from Airtel will be available in 8 cities- Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi, Bangalore and other cities.”
He said that Airtel will launch 5G services in many cities across the country by March 2023 and across India by March 2024.
According to the Department of Telecommunications, 5G technology is expected to deliver ten times better download speed and three times higher spectrum efficiency than 4G.
Mittal praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his understanding of technology and linking it with the progress of the country.
“We are proud and very fortunate that we have a leader who understands technology closely. Many leaders appreciate technology but its fine understanding and linking it to the progress of the country, what can Modi ji do according to me? No one else would be able to,” he said.
Bharti Airtel chairman Sunil Mittal said Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio’s efforts to push 4G technology in India forced them to “catch up”.
“I want to remind Mukesh (Ambani) that he gave 4G a very high speed and we ran too fast to catch it. When COVID knocked, the pulse of this nation didn’t stop for a minute. Our work continued round the clock and the credit goes to the digital mission,” Mittal said.
He said that the Prime Minister gave the slogan of Startup, which led to the creation of Unicorns every month.
“I believe that with 5G there will be hundreds of use cases, thousands of entrepreneurs and dozens of new unicorns created,” he said.
According to a senior company official, Airtel 5G services will be available at existing 4G rates and a new tariff plan for 5G will be announced sometime later. 5G services are also being launched in Chennai, Hyderabad, Nagpur and Siliguri.
Bharti Airtel’s Chief Technology Officer Randeep Singh Sekhon said the company’s backend infrastructure is ready.
“We need to install some equipment on the mobile towers for 5G service. We are doing it gradually. Till date, this service will be available in the vicinity of the towers where the equipment has been installed,” Sekhon said.
He said that every day Airtel is adding new cities for 5G services and increasing its penetration in the cities.
He further added, “People need to have a 5G phone to use this service, which is being launched today. They will not need to replace their existing 4G SIM.”
Bharti Airtel along with Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung placed an order for the 5G Gear soon after the auction ended.
The Sunil Mittal-led firm recently acquired 19,867.8 MHz of spectrum in the 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 3300 MHz and 26 GHz bands, boosting its spectrum holding.
Bharti Airtel acquired spectrum worth ₹43,084 crore in the recently concluded auction. PTI PRS MBI Bali
