Today, the aviation regulator strongly disapproved of Air India’s handling of a Mumbai man urinating on a woman passenger on a flight last year. The man walked away without being punished.
In a notice to the Tata Group-owned airline, the pilot and crew, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has asked them to respond within two weeks.
An elderly woman in the business class of an Air India flight from New York to Delhi was allegedly urinated on by Mumbai businessman Shankar Mishra on November 26. When the flight landed, Shankar Mishra was allowed to leave without any repercussions. Despite the woman’s letter to the group chairman of Air India, N Chandrasekaran, Air India didn’t complain to the police until this week.
The DGCA said in a statement that provisions for handling an unruly passenger on-board were not followed.
This airline’s conduct appears unprofessional and has led to a systemic failure.”
Aviation watchdog said it sent notices to the airline’s accountable manager, director of in-flight services, pilots and cabin crew members of that flight asking them to explain why no action should be taken.
Earlier this year, the government banned unruly passengers from flying for three months to two years.
It told the regulator its staff didn’t take action against the businessman because the “aggrieved lady rescinded her initial request for action” after the two “appeared to have sorted it out”.
Air India banned the offender from flying for 30 days, pending a report from its internal committee.
The airline says there was no further flare-up or confrontation and the crew decided not to summon law enforcement after landing because there was no further flare-up or confrontation.
