As part of a project to modernise India’s air assets, Airbus Defence and Space handed over the first of 56 C295 transport aircraft to the Indian Air Force on Wednesday. The project is worth 21,935 crores and was signed two years ago.

The aircraft was received by Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari at the aerospace major’s production facility in Seville, southern Spain.

A deal under the deal stipulates that Airbus will deliver 16 aircraft in ‘fly-away’ condition by 2025 from its final assembly line in Seville, while Tata Advanced Systems (TASL) will manufacture and assemble the remaining 40 aircraft in India as part of an industrial partnership.

A manufacturing facility for 295 planes was laid in Vadodara by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last October. A private consortium will manufacture India’s first military aircraft.

Avro-748 planes entered service over six decades ago are being replaced by the C295 aircraft by the Indian Air Force (IAF).

A total of 280 orders from 39 operators make the C295 a unique aircraft in its weight and mission class, according to the plane maker.

The C295 is considered a superior aircraft for tactical transport of up to 71 troops or 50 paratroopers, as well as for logistic operations to locations inaccessible to heavier aircraft.

In addition to dropping paratroops and loads, the aircraft can also be used to evacuate casualties or patients.

As well as disaster response and maritime patrol duties, the aircraft can perform special missions.

The C295 programme will see Airbus, in collaboration with its industrial partners, bring its full suite of world-class aircraft manufacturing and servicing to India.

The maiden flight of the first C295 aircraft built for India took place in Seville in May. It is scheduled for delivery to the IAF in May next year after completing final assembly at the Seville facility.

In collaboration with its industrial partners, Airbus said the C295 programme would bring its world-class aircraft manufacturing and servicing to India.

An extensive training program has already been conducted at the Seville facility for six pilots and 20 technicians from the IAF.

In November next year, Vadodara’s C295 final assembly line will become operational.

According to officials, the IAF will be the world’s largest operator of the C295 aircraft.
