Hisachal Pradesh’s Chief Minister will be sworn in today by Congress leader Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. MLA Sukhu from Nadaun in the Hamirpur district of the hill state headed the Congress’ state election campaign committee

The late Congress veteran and MP Pratibha Singh successfully lobbied the Congress high command to appoint Mr Sukhu.

Today, Congress heavyweights in the state showed unity. Mr Sukhu by her side, Ms Singh told the media, “Why won’t I attend his oath ceremony? I certainly will attend. I am expected to be there with him as he takes oath.” As the Chief Minister designate pointed out, “She is our party’s state chief and we serve under her. I will be inviting her to attend.”

After the Congress contested and won the elections in Virbhadra Singh’s name, Ms Singh believes it would be a disaster to sideline his family. The party’s newly elected 40 MLAs do not support her, which hurts her chances.

After the high command selected Mr Sukhu last night, she accepted his selection. They asked the Congress high command to choose a legislator who would also be the chief minister as part of their earlier request.

Mr Sukhu, a close friend of Rahul Gandhi and a former state Congress president, had a difficult working relationship with Virbhadra Singh, who died last year.

His political career began as a bus driver on the campus of Himachal Pradesh University, where he was originally from Shimla. After that, he rose through the ranks of the Congress students’ wing state unit.

As a self-made leader, he worked at all levels of the party for four decades, contrary to Virbhadra Singh’s royal background.

A lawyer by profession, Mr. Sukhu is also a member of Team Rahul. The Congress’ decision to choose a worker-turned-leader over royal inheritors comes at a time when Mr Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ emphasizes grassroots work.

In a balanced move, Mukesh Agnihotri was chosen as Deputy Chief Minister by the Congress.

Vikramaditya Singh, the son of Pratibha Singh, could also be appointed to cabinet as a way to pacify them.
