Sinking Joshimath: The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) reported that Joshimath sank 5.4 cm in just 12 days, so the National Disaster Management Authority has banned government institutions from talking to the media and sharing ground subsidence data on social media. Organizations are confusing people with their “own interpretations” of data.

Government institutions are releasing data on the subject on social media, and they’re interacting with media with their own interpretation of it. In the NDMA letter, the issue was raised at a meeting chaired by the Union Home Minister on January 12. It’s not only confusing affected residents, but also the rest of the country.

The disaster management agency pointed out that an expert group has been formed to assess ground subsidence at Joshimath. It asked several institutions, including ISRO, to “sensitize” their organization about this and to refrain from posting anything on social media until the expert group releases its final report.

In the report, witnesses said the massive soil sinking was caused by “a rapid subsidence event that happened on January 2, 2023.”

Joshimath, considered a holy town since it’s a gateway to Hindu and Sikh shrines, developed deep cracks in December last year, triggering panic. According to a satellite survey, around 4,000 families have been evacuated.

Locals and environmentalists have been warning about indiscriminate construction in Joshimath for years. Instead, the government has widened roads, built dams and power plants, and allowed hotels and multi-story buildings to sprout.
