US media reported that Matthew Perry, star of the hit TV sitcom “Friends,” was found dead at his home in Los Angeles on Saturday. He was 54 years old. Law enforcement sources told the Los Angeles Times that Perry was found unconscious in a hot tub at his house and could not be revived.

Los Angeles Police Department spokesman told AFP the case is being investigated as a death investigation involving a male in his 50s.

According to a fire department spokesperson, they responded to a “water emergency,” which may have been a “pool, spa, bathtub or fountain,” but they could not confirm Perry’s death.

During the run of “Friends” from 1994 to 2004, Perry played the wisecracking Chandler Bing.

He spent millions of dollars in repeated attempts to get sober in his memoir “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing,” published last year.

In the prologue, Perry writes: “I should be dead.” Dedicated to “all sufferers out there,” Perry wrote: “I should be dead.”

In his letter, he said, “I’ve mostly been sober since 2001, save for sixty or seventy little mishaps along the way.”

There were no drugs found at the scene, according to TMZ, which broke the news first. An assistant of Perry found Perry and called 911, according to a celebrity news outlet.

According to anonymous sources cited by the LA Times and TMZ, there were no indications of “foul play”.

After Perry’s death was announced, Hollywood’s social media community reacted.

The 1994 television movie “Parallel Lives” starred Perry and Mira Sorvino. They wrote, “Oh no!!! Matthew Perry!! You sweet, troubled soul!!”

The Good Wife actor Josh Charles wrote: “Awful news. RIP.”

The Warner Brothers TV network, which produced “Friends,” tweeted: “We are devastated to hear of Matthew Perry’s passing. He was a true gift to us all.”.

It caused concern among fans when Perry slurred his words during that episode.

While filming the sitcom, Perry surprised his costars by revealing that he suffered from severe anxiety “every night.”

The “Friends” star also appeared in “The Whole Nine Yards” and “Fools Rush In.”

A guest appearance on “The West Wing” earned him two Emmy nominations, but he did not win.

There was no marriage for Perry.
