After Droupadi Murmu approves Manish Sisodia’s and Satyendar Jain’s resignations, Arvind Kejriwal might make the appointments.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s Saurabh Bhardwaj and Atishi are likely to get minister posts after senior leaders Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain, both jailed in corruption cases, stepped down last evening.
AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal sent necessary documents to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, sources said.
Bhardwaj represents Greater Kailash in south Delhi and is AAP’s spokesperson. He’s also vice-chairman of Delhi Jal Board, which supplies water to the city. Mr Kejriwal was a cabinet minister in the AAP government during its 49-day tenure in 2013-14, after which he stepped down, taking responsibility for the failure to bring the anti-corruption Jan Lokpal Bill.
Ms Atishi is an MLA from Kalkaji and on the AAP’s political affairs committee. She was an advisor to Mr Sisodia between 2015 and 2017. Over the last few years, she’s become a prominent face of the party.
Last night, Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Sisodia and Health Minister Jain stepped down. Mr Sisodia resigned hours after the Supreme Court refused relief and asked him to challenge his arrest in the liquor policy case.
BJP members were wondering why the two ministers still hold cabinet posts despite being arrested for corruption.
Earlier yesterday, the AAP said the resignations weren’t an admission of guilt, just an administrative move.
AAP’s key focus areas are education and health, which Raaj Kumar Anand handles for now. The power and water supply departments are under Kailash Gahlot.
According to Mr Sisodia, who was arrested on Sunday over allegations of corruption in the liquor policy case, he could be in jail for 7-8 months.
‘I’m stepping down until the charges against me are proven false,’ he wrote.
“There are probably more cases against me… God knows these allegations are false,” he said, adding that he was charged with corruption despite working honestly for eight years.
AAP Number Two, who revamped Delhi’s government schools, is in the CBI.
Jain has been in jail since May in a money laundering case. He’s in judicial custody right now.
There can be a maximum of seven ministers for Delhi, or 10% of the 70 Assembly seats.
