As cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ intensified into an “extremely severe cyclonic storm”, evacuations continued in Gujarat villages today. On Thursday afternoon, it is likely to make landfall between Kutch and Karachi, Pakistan.
Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, chaired this morning’s disaster management meeting with state and union territory ministers. After a high-level review meeting yesterday on cyclone Biparjoy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed officials to evacuate vulnerable individuals as soon as possible.
Last evening, PM Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel spoke over the phone about the cyclone. According to Mr Patel, PM Modi asked about the state’s preparedness and assured all possible assistance.
When the cyclone makes landfall on Thursday, the wind speed will likely be around 150 kmph and the cyclone will have “extreme damaging potential.”.
In Gujarat’s Kutch and Saurashtra districts, authorities have begun evacuating residents from villages within 10 km of the coast. Amit Arora, Kutch collector, said that around 8,600 people have been relocated to shelter homes in preparation for cyclone Biparjoy.
There has already been a cyclone alert issued in the two districts. Up to Thursday, the sea conditions will likely remain rough along Saurashtra and Kutch coasts. The Indian Meteorological Department said the cyclone is likely to affect Kutch, Jamnagar, Morbi, Gir Somnath, Porbandar, and Devbhumi Dwarka districts during June 13-15.
Gujarat Relief Commissioner Alok Pandey said a dozen teams from the national and state disaster forces have been deployed and shelter, food, and medicines have been provided to those evacuated. Coast Guard ships patrol the coast and the Army and Navy are on standby.
In Mumbai’s Juhu beach yesterday, a boy drowned while two others were rescued. A search is underway for two more missing boys. As a result of the impending cyclone, Mumbai experienced rough seas yesterday.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into the seas off Gujarat, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Lakshadweep. Additionally, ports are required to hoist signals to alert vessels to impending adverse weather conditions.
As the cyclone is expected to enter southwest Rajasthan on Friday, some trains have been cancelled by the North Western Railway. Furthermore, Western Railway short-ended over 50 trains yesterday heading towards coastal areas in Gujarat and is considering canceling several trains over the next three days. To ensure smooth rail operations, the railways have activated a disaster management room and opened emergency control rooms in several districts of Gujarat.
Bangladesh named the cyclone ‘Biparjoy’, which means “calamity”. The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) countries adopted the name in 2020, according to the IMD website.
