In a major boost to the Indian Navy’s maritime and combat capabilities, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today commissioned INS Mormugao, an indigenous stealth guided missile destroyer.
Mormugao in Goa is the name of the warship, which measures 163 metres by 17 metres. It is capable of fighting under nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare conditions.
Powered by four powerful gas turbines, the warship can reach speeds over 30 knots.
Sensors and weapons aboard the INS Mormugao are said to be state-of-the-art. Aside from surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, it is equipped with a modern surveillance radar that provides target information to the weapon systems.
It is the second of four destroyers of the ‘Visakhapatnam’ class built by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited built the warship.
On December 19, last year, INS Mormugao conducted its first sea sortie to commemorate Goa’s liberation from Portuguese rule. According to a defence release, it will significantly enhance the Navy’s combat capabilities.
