Four cases of the BF.7 sub-variant of Omicron, which is driving the Covid surge in China, have been detected in India. Cases have been found in Gujarat and Odisha. As of now, there’s no mandatory COVID protocol.

Gujarat’s health department confirmed to NDTV that two cases of BF.7 and BF.12 forms of Omicron were reported in October and November. They were treated in home confinement and are now fully recovered. Sources say the first case came up in July.

All Covid positive cases should be sent to INSACOG genome sequencing labs. Under the Health Ministry, INSACOG studies and monitors the different strains of Covid in India, which is mapped with all states and union territories.

International passengers are being randomly sampled at airports across the country starting today. While there’s no need to panic, the Centre has advised people to wear masks in crowded areas and said it will monitor the situation every week.

At the moment, there’s no Covid-19 protocol for public gatherings or tourist spots. Since the Center’s June advisory, masks aren’t mandatory in any state. According to the Centre’s advisory, states should follow Covid-appropriate behavior, but follow Covid-appropriate mask usage.

Airports don’t require masks either, but social distance is recommended.

In a meeting with experts and top officials this morning, Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said COVID isn’t over yet. I told all concerned to be alert and strengthen surveillance. We’re ready for anything.”

There’s no need to panic, says VK Paul, the head of NITI Aayog’s national task force on Covid. People should wear masks in crowded places. International air travel guidelines haven’t changed yet, he said.   

There have been 129 new infections in the last 24 hours and 3,408 active cases. A new death was reported over the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 5,30,677.

As a result of its zero-Covid policy, China has struggled to contain a rampant Covid surge. There’s a patient overload in hospitals, and pharmacies are out of medicine.

There were five Covid deaths in Beijing on Tuesday, up from two on Monday. The COVID death statistics only count people who died directly from respiratory failure caused by the virus.
