Uttarakhand Gorge: Last night, a bus carrying wedding guests fell into a gorge in Uttarakhand, killing at least 25 people. The accident site in Pauri Garhwal was the scene of an all-night rescue operation that rescued some 20 passengers.s.
As the bus traveled along a mountain highway in Uttarakhand, it went over the edge and fell at least 500 meters.
Last night, 25 people were found dead in the Birokhal area of Dhumakot following a Pauri Garhwal bus accident. According to state police chief Ashok Kumar, 21 people were rescued overnight by the SDRF (State Disaster Response Force). The injured have been hospitalized nearby.
Rescue teams can be seen taking injured passengers to safety in photos tweeted by the police during the overnight operation.
Droupadi Murmu tweeted that she was pained by the deaths in the accident and hoped the injured would recover quickly.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office called the accident “heartbreaking” and promised all help. My thoughts are with the bereaved families of the bus accident in Pauri, Uttarakhand in this tragic hour. I hope those injured recover as soon as possible. Rescue operations are underway. “All possible assistance will be provided to those affected,” PM Modi tweeted, quoted by his office.
The state government stands with their families, said Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.
The wedding party had left from Laldhang in the district, about 122 kilometers from the accident site in Pauri Garhwal, according to Haridwar police chief Swantantra Kumar Singh.
