Tourist Boat Tragedy: An overturned double-decker boat sank near a beach in Kerala’s Malappuram district Sunday evening, killing 22 people, including seven children.

Around 7 pm, the incident occurred near Tuvalthiram beach in Tanur district. Police have filed a case against the boat’s owner for culpable homicide.
While the exact number of passengers on the boat is still unknown, 40 had tickets while many others did not. It was also reported that the boat lacked a safety certificate.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Coast Guard are involved in rescue operations. Missing people are being tracked down with underwater cameras.
There was shock and sadness expressed by leaders across the political spectrum.
As a gesture of condolence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the families of each victim would receive two lakh rupees in compensation.
Our condolences go out to the bereaved families following the boat mishap in Malappuram, Kerala. The Prime Minister’s office tweeted Sunday evening that “an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh will be provided to the next of kin of each deceased.”
Rahul Gandhi, former Wayanad MP and Congress leader, wished those injured a speedy recovery as well.
The news of a houseboat capsized in Malappuram, Kerala, left me devastated. The Congress workers should assist authorities in rescue operations, Mr Gandhi tweeted. “I extend my deepest condolences to all those who have lost their loved ones, as well as speedy recovery to those who have been injured.”
Pinarayi Vijayan, Kerala’s chief minister, has announced that he will visit the site today and has directed the Malappuram district collector to begin an emergency rescue operation immediately. Rescue efforts were conducted by police, fire, and health officials, as well as locals from Tanur.
