Modi Surname: Rahul Gandhi was charged with insulting PM Narendra Modi over his last name, which he shares with fugitive businessmen Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi.

Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to two years in prison on Thursday in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surname by a Gujarat court in Surat. To allow him to appeal the decision, the sentence was suspended for 30 days.

Purnesh Modi, a former Gujarat minister and BJP MLA, filed the case against Mr Gandhi for saying, “How come all thieves have the same surname?”?”

While addressing a rally in Kolar, Karnataka ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Wayanad MP targeted PM Modi over the last name he shares with fugitive businessmen Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi.

Earlier in the day, Mr Gandhi arrived in Surat for the verdict and was welcomed by top Congress leaders.

There were posters extolling Mr Gandhi as “Sher-e-Hindustan” (Lion of India) and placards stating that the “Congress would not bow to the dictatorship of the BJP” on display at various locations in the city as a show of strength and support for him.

Mr Gandhi’s lawyer Kirit Panwala said last week that the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Varma had concluded hearing final arguments from both sides and was prepared to pronounce its verdict in the four-year-old defamation case.

There have been several false cases filed against Gandhi, but he will emerge from them all. We will get justice,” said Arjun Modhwadia, a senior Congress leader and MLA.

In October 2021, Mr Gandhi last appeared before the Surat court in the case.

Purnesh Modi, a BJP MLA, alleges that Mr Gandhi defamed the entire Modi community at the 2019 poll rally.

Bhupendra Patel’s first government included Purnesh Modi as a minister. During the December elections, he was re-elected to the Surat West Assembly seat.

According to Mr Gandhi’s lawyer, the court proceedings were flawed from the beginning. Furthermore, the lawyer argued that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, not MLA Purnesh Modi, should have been the complainant in the case since the PM was the main target of Gandhi’s remarks.
