16 Dalits Tortured In Karnataka: Dalit residents are being held without food or water for days by the owner of a coffee plantation in Chikkamagaluru district in Karnataka. It is alleged that the victims were tortured.
A woman’s unborn baby was killed after she was assaulted, according to the police. A police investigation has been launched, and the woman is being treated at the district hospital.
In accordance with the law against atrocities against Dalits, the police are searching for Jagadeesha Gowda and his son Tilak Gowda. In both cases, an arrest warrant has been issued and they are on the run.
Between the man and the BJP, there has been a distance. According to the district spokesperson, he is not a leader of the party. Neither Jagadeesh nor Varasiddhi Venugopal are BJP workers or members. As a voter, he is no different from anyone else.
In Jenugadde village, they worked at a coffee plantation. They borrowed 9 lakh rupees from the owner, according to the police. They were locked up after failing to repay the loan.
People complained about Jagadeesh Gowda torturing their relatives at Balehonnur police station on October 8. A police officer said that the complaint was later withdrawn.
As soon as the SP referred the case to us, we registered a First Information Report,” said Chikkamagaluru police chief.
During his investigation, the officer stated that at least eight to ten people had been locked up in a room. They were released after the police questioned the owner.
For the past 15 days, they have been under house arrest. Including 16 members from Scheduled Castes, there are four families. All 16 were kept under house arrest, according to the complainant,” said the officer.
One day of house arrest was imposed on me. The abuse I received included beatings and verbal abuse. As a result of it, he confiscated my phone,” said Arpitha, who lost her baby. Her mother reported that Jagadeesha Gowda beat up her daughter and her husband. “She was two months’ pregnant. Her baby died as a result.” she said.
Police Superintendent Uma Prashanth said Jagadeesha Gowda had lent money to the workers.
In response to the complaint by the families of the victims, some of the men who borrowed money had left home, and the owner kept the rest locked up.
