15-km Jam, No Hotel Rooms: Himachal Landslide Nightmare For 200 Tourists

Since last evening, flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rain in Himachal Pradesh have blocked the Mandi-Kullu highway.

Over 200 people, mostly tourists, have been stranded due to a blockage on the national highway connecting Mandi and Kullu in Himachal Pradesh due to a traffic jam at least 15 km long.

Heavy rains triggered flash floods and landslides in the hill state last evening, blocking the highway. Heavy boulders blocking the road are being blasted with explosives, according to officials. PTI reported that the road would be open to traffic after seven-eight hours.

Commuters are experiencing a harrowing commute.

Sohail Yousuf and Azaz Hasan, tourists stranded due to the massive road blockade, spoke with NDTV. They were on their way to Bhuntar airport when they got stuck in the blockade. We were stopped by the police at 10 pm and asked to go back. The traffic jam here is at least 15 km long,” Mr Hasan told NDTV in a video interview.

“No tourist was prepared for this. There are families, kids. Some have booked entire buses. Some are waiting at dhabas. They are worried for their children.”

There are power projects and tourist resorts in these areas, but no alternative road connects them. He said a highway had been closed since 5 pm yesterday, but the road hadn’t been cleared yet.

According to Mr Yousuf, they do not know when traffic movement will resume. The police haven’t given us any information about this situation, so we aren’t sure whether we should drive forward or turn around.

There should have been a system in place to inform people before they approached the blockade, according to Mr Hasan. As we were driving for about 5 hours after the landslide, we didn’t realize that it would cause this road blockade. And here we are, stranded in a 6-kilometer traffic jam,” he said.

Adesh Katyayan, another tourist caught in Himachal’s rough weather, was on his way to Kullu when a landslide blocked the road in front of them. Then we headed back to Mandi, where we spent the night. Now we are returning to Kullu,” he explained. On the route he took, at least 500 cars were stranded, and many people spent the night on the road.

The local weather office has issued an alert for more rain and thunderstorms in Himachal over the next two days, which will worry tourists and their families more.
