An incoming Qantas plane issued a mayday alert mid-air with engine trouble before landing safely at Sydney airport on Wednesday, prompting an ambulance response.

Qantas said the flight — QF144 — carried 145 passengers from Auckland, New Zealand.
An AFP reporter at the scene said the Boeing 737-800 landed without incident and will now be inspected by engineers.
Before the plane touched down, Qantas downgraded the mayday alert to a PAN, or “possible assistance needed.”
In a statement, the airline said one of the aircraft’s engines had “experienced an issue” about two hours after takeoff.
It said that while inflight engine shutdowns are rare, our pilots know how to handle them safely and aircraft are designed to fly for long periods on one engine.
According to Airservices Australia, a PAN indicates a situation that “requires attention from air traffic control”.
For more than 70 years, Qantas has been ranked among the world’s safest airlines.
According to NSW Ambulance, the service started its “emergency activation” plans after the plane made a mayday call over the Tasman Sea.
At the airport, paramedics were called and ambulances were on standby.
Even with just one engine, the Boeing 737-800 can land safely.
A mayday call means an aircraft is in grave danger and needs help right away.
