Andhra Train Accident: A collision occurred last evening between two passengers trains on the Howrah-Chennai line in the Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh.
Last evening, a passenger train overshot the signal and hit another from behind on the Howrah-Chennai line in Andhra Pradesh. Thirteen people were killed and 40 injured.
Due to no signal, a Vizag-Rayagada passenger train hit a special train between Visakhapatnam and Palasa on the main line between Alamanda and Kantakapalle.
DRM Saurabh Prasad told NDTV that three coaches from Visakhapatnam-Palasa train, along with its locomotive, were derailed. During the derailment, one coach rested on a wagon that was used to haul goods.
Vizianagaram Collector Nagalakshmi confirmed to NDTV that 13 people have died, up from nine last night. She hopes to complete the rescue efforts by this morning. Various hospitals are treating at least 40 injured people.
Mr Biswajit Sahu, PRO, told NDTV this morning that 18 trains have been cancelled and 22 diverted so far. According to him, the collision may have been caused by the fault of the Vizag-Rayagada loco pilot. The loco pilot may not have noticed the signalling, according to railway sources.
The coaches derailed last evening and people crowded around the site. According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the site was cleared by midnight, except for the derailed and affected coaches.
There will be financial assistance of ten lakh rupees provided to the families of those who died, according to Chief Minister YSR Jagan Mohan Reddy. For serious injuries, passengers will receive 2.5 lakh rupees, and for minor injuries, they will receive 50,000 rupees.
After reviewing the situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the deaths. Additional aid of two lakhs was announced for families of those who died in the accident, and fifty thousand dollars was announced for those who were injured.
During the conversation with the railway minister, Chief Minister Reddy expressed deep shock over the accident and ordered all arrangements be made to ensure the injured were treated. A time-to-time update on the incident has also been sought by Mr. Reddy.
Railways source said the war room in Delhi railway ministry is monitoring the situation. A helpline number has been released by the East Coast Railway (Bhubaneswar – 0674-2301625, 2301525, 2303069, and Waltair – 0891-2885914).
