The bus caught fire after it collided with a trailer truck carrying diesel on the Nashik-Aurangabad highway, he said.
Nashik Deputy Commissioner of Police Amol Tambe said, “Most of the dead were passengers of the bus – a sleeper coach. The injured have been taken to a hospital for treatment.”
He said a case has been registered and investigation is on to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.
The video showed a large ball of fire engulfing the bus as firefighters tried to douse the blaze.
Witnesses said the accident happened around 5.15 am after which they called the police and an ambulance.
They said the fire was so severe that they could not do anything to save the passengers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each for the families who lost a member in an accident. ₹50,000 will be given to the injured.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of those killed in the Nashik Bus Catches Fire accident.
State minister Dada Bhuse said that the Maharashtra government would bear the cost of the treatment of the injured.
Officials said the death toll in the accident could rise as some of the injured were in critical condition.
