Several people were injured, including four seriously, in a stampede in Odisha’s Cuttack district on Saturday.

There were a lot of people congregating on Badamba-Gopinathpur T-Bridge on the occasion of Makar Mela, a police officer said on stampede.
Anjana Swain, 45, a Badamba-Narsinghpur MLA and former minister, died in the incident, while four seriously injured people were admitted to SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack.
Other people were taken to a community health center (CHC) in Badamba, Mishra said.
A 5 lakh ex-gratia was announced for the deceased’s next of kin by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in response to the incident.
Patnaik said the injured people would get free treatment and wished them a speedy recovery.
The incident occurred because of a sudden surge in devotees, including children and women, visiting a fair on the occasion and paying obeisance to Lord Singhanath in the afternoon.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, people had been away from the temple for two years.
It was packed with devotees from Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, and Nayagarh districts, the sub-collector said.
