Customs Haul At Delhi Airport: A diamond-studded white gold wristwatch worth Rs 27 crore was among the seven high-end watches seized by customs officials at the Delhi airport on Thursday, officials said.
He said that a diamond studded bracelet and an iPhone 14 Pro have been recovered from a passenger who had come from Dubai.
The goods were being smuggled in to evade duties and levies on such products, he said, adding that it was the “largest seizure” at the Indira Gandhi International Airport of commercial or luxury goods.
One of the watches, made by American jeweler and watchmaker Jacob & Co., is an “extraordinarily highly customized, billionaire piece made of gold and studded with diamonds”, customs officials said.
A listing page for the timepiece states that the Swiss-made ‘Billionaire III Baguette White Diamonds 54 x 43 mm watch’ is made of 18-karat white gold set with 76 white diamonds.
Its skeleton dial is also inlaid with diamonds, and features a manual-winding movement.
According to customs officials, a search of the passenger’s luggage resulted in the recovery of six other wristwatches, including a Piaget Limelight Stella and five Rolexes.
While Piaget costs around ₹31 lakhs, Rolex costs around ₹15 lakhs.
The total value of the confiscated goods is more than Rs 28 crore.
“Alert customs officials at Delhi airport have made this possible despite the high passenger traffic. Indian Customs has always ensured maximum convenience to genuine passengers with minimum hassle, as well as economic borders by curbing smuggling. Security has been ensured,” Chief Commissioner, Delhi Customs Zone Surjit Bhujbal said in a statement.
Commissioner Airport Delhi Customs Zubair Riaz Kamili said, “In commercial or luxury goods, this is the largest seizure in terms of value at IGI airport in one go. In terms of value, it is about 60 kg of gold seized in one instance is equivalent to doing.”
