BJP MLA Arrested In Hyderabad After Massive Protests

Telangana BJP MLA T Raja Singh was arrested today for his alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad.

Hyderabad South Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police P Sai Chaitanya said a case has been registered under sections of the law relating to insult to religious belief.

According to various reports, protests broke out in front of the office of city police commissioner CV Anand and other parts of Hyderabad on Monday night.

Mr Singh had released a 10-minute video which allegedly made derogatory remarks about the Prophet Muhammad.

Taking a dig at comedian Munawwar Farooqui, whose show he tried unsuccessfully to disrupt recently, he said it was a “comedy” video like Mr. Farooqui’s alleged video on Hindu deities.

Protesters in Hyderabad said Mr Singh had hurt the sentiments of the community and demanded his immediate arrest.

A huge crowd had gathered outside the commissioner’s office and several other places in the city. The protesters were taken into custody and later shifted to various police stations.

T Raja Singh, MLA from the city’s Goshamahal, tried to disrupt a comedy show last week.

He was taken into preventive custody by the police on Friday after he tried to reach the venue along with around 50 supporters to call for the cancellation of stand-up comedian Munawwar Farooqui’s show. After this the show ended peacefully.

Mr Singh’s controversial comments come months after former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma triggered a massive diplomatic backlash with his remarks on the Prophet.

Nupur Sharma was suspended by BJP and 10 cases were registered against her across the country.
